Old Car Festival Lecture: Alice Ramsey Centennial
September 12 (3pm) and September 13 (1pm)
Meet Dorothy Grace and share her memoirs of a 2009 cross-country driving adventure in a pre-1915 car. She and her friend, Dana McNair, made the journey to commemorate Automotive Hall of Fame’s Alice Ramsey who made the same trip one hundred years earlier. Alice’s trip, which lasted 59 days, earned her the distinction of being the first woman to drive across the continental United States. She was further honored for her heroic achievement in 1960 when she was named the “Woman Motorist of the Century” by the American Automobile Association and the “First Lady of Automobile Travel” by the Automobile Manufacturers Association. In 2000 she became the first woman inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame.
The lecture will focus on Ms. Grace’s fascinating experiences when she and a friend reconstructed the same trip, exactly one century later, in two open-topped and largely un-restored brass era vehicles.
The event will be held in the Greenfield Village Pavilion and is free to members or with Greenfield Village admission.
