The aircraft collection at The Henry Ford covers the period from the Wright brothers first flight to the beginning of World War II. During this time the airplane was transformed from an invention of unknown practical value into an innovation of world-wide significance. Our planes hauled people and mail; took explorers to the ends of the earth (literally); were piloted by barnstormers (both male and female); and competed in air races. We have America's first successful helicopter, and a rare autogiro. The aircraft collection is one that vividly illustrates why this period is known as the Golden Age of Aviation.
