Olaudah Equiano, 1745-1797, was a ship's navigator, writer and activist in the British anti-slavery movement. Born in eastern Nigeria, he was captured and sold into slavery. He served on Royal Navy and American merchant ships while enslaved and as a free man. He purchased his freedom in 1766.
