Elizabeth Keckley, 1824-1907, who, born into slavery in Virginia, worked as a dressmaker in St.Louis where, in 1855, she was able to purchase her and her son's freedom. She then moved to Washington, D.C. where she worked as a dressmaker for many prominent people including Mary Todd Lincoln.
