The youngest enslaved children on the plantation were
not forced to work. Their days were filled with child's play.
All children love toys--and these children were clever and resourceful at making their playthings from materials found on the plantation. This doll, fashioned from a gourd and some cloth, is the kind that might have been made by children on a plantation. It wasn't always fun and games for children, though. By the time they were 10 or 12, children were working alongside their parents. Tasks were assigned and had to be completed before they had time to play again. |
