Typed sheet of paper adhered to back of image reads: INDEPENDENCE ROCK on Sweetwater River, 50 miles west of Caspar (sic), has been / aptly termed the "register of the Desert". At this place all the detouring / lines of the Oregon Trail converged to a single track and thousands of / trappers, explorers and emigrants inscribed their names on this rock in passing. / Independence Rock, on the Sweetwater River, Wyoming, fifty miles west of / Fort Caspar, with an emigrant train corralling for camp.
