Hanks Silk Mill
This unassuming frame building near the mulberry grove in Greenfield Village tells a little-known story of early American silk entrepreneurship. Benjamin Hanks, Sr. (1665-1755), the first member of the New England branch of the Hanks family, arrived in Plymouth Colony, Massachusetts, from England in 1699. Two of his descendants, Rodney Hanks and Horace Hanks, built the Hanks Silk Mill in 1810. It is the first powered silk mill in the United States. Stop by for a demonstration and see the mill in action.
