Rare Book Survey Internship

Simmons Graduate Internship Program

The Rare Book Collection at The Henry Ford Benson Ford Research Center is a valuable resource. We request an intern to complete a survey of this collection. The survey would include overall condition, condition of shelfing, valuation, and cross checking with catalog records. The completion of this survey will allow Library staff to better utilize the rare book collection for researchers and special access and assist with the continued stewardship of the collection.

Working with library staff, the interns duties will include:

  • Rare Book Handling
  • Completion of previously developed survey
  • Research into provenance and value of library items

In addition, at the completion of the internship, with assistance and input from appropriate staff, the student will present a synopsis of the project to an audience of The Henry Ford staff.

Skills and abilities required:

In addition to being currently enrolled in a graduate-level program with an archival or library focus, the student should have:

  • Experience with MS Excel

Additional desirable credentials:

  • Rare Book Handling Experience
  • Familiarity with MARC records
  • Research Skills

Successful completion of the internship will give the student experience with:

  • Rare Book collections
  • MARC records
  • Special Collection Policies
  • Provenance Research
  • Working relationship with a Special Collections library team
