- Union Navy Sailor, 1861-1865 - This carte-de-visite made by Tubbs & Woodbridge of Binghamton, New York, shows an unknown Union Navy sailor in his uniform. Professional photographers made cartes-de-visite beginning in the 1860s. Mounted on small cardboard stock, these early photographic prints proved popular in the United States from the Civil War through the 1880s. Americans exchanged and collected CdVs to help them remember family and celebrities.

Union Navy Sailor, 1861-1865
This carte-de-visite made by Tubbs & Woodbridge of Binghamton, New York, shows an unknown Union Navy sailor in his uniform. Professional photographers made cartes-de-visite beginning in the 1860s. Mounted on small cardboard stock, these early photographic prints proved popular in the United States from the Civil War through the 1880s. Americans exchanged and collected CdVs to help them remember family and celebrities.

Workers at Will Currier's shoe shop in Newton, New Hampshire, used a variety of tools, fasteners and bits of leather, wood, and metal to make shoes. Small wooden boxes, like this one, helped organize the shop and kept needed material close at hand.
- Mail Order Catalog, "McKinney & Company Hardware and Tools, Roofing & Paints, Mail Order - Everything for the Farm," 1913 - This mail order catalog dates from 1913, the year that parcel post service began. Rural postal customers now not only had their mail delivered to their homes, but goods as well -- much more convenient than having to make a trip into town. This McKinney & Company catalog is filled with practical products for farm use: building supplies, hardware and tools, and supplies for raising poultry.

Individual sheets of flexible cellulose nitrate were housed in light-safe film holders. Large format film produced by Kodak and others held copious amounts of information, perfect for crisp, faithful reproductions. A less flammable "safety" sheet film was introduced in 1925.

In 1913, Kodak introduced their pioneering Eastman Portrait Film for the professional photographer as an alternative to glass plate photography. Individual sheets of flexible cellulose nitrate were housed in light-safe film holders. Large format film produced by Kodak and others held copious amounts of information, perfect for crisp, faithful reproductions. A less flammable "safety" sheet film was introduced in 1925.

These hand-operated, rotary crank beaters were first patented in the mid-1800s and by the end of the century had become valued labor-saving devices for cooks and housewives. The A&J Manufacturing Company of Binghamton, New York, was one of the largest producers of kitchen tools in the early 1900s.
