- Hoover "Model 150" Vacuum Cleaner, 1936-1939 - Industrial design pioneer Henry Dreyfuss created Hoover's 1936 Model 150 upright vacuum cleaner. It had a magnesium chassis and a Bakelite plastic hood, making it more lightweight. Henry Dreyfuss was a leading proponent of streamlined design--a modern, rounded, aerodynamic form which increasingly shaped 1930s household appliance design. Dreyfuss stressed "designing for people"--developing products that not only looked good, but also worked well.

- Hoover Model 28 Vacuum Cleaner, 1946-1950 - As World War II wound down, American factories stopped manufacturing military equipment and resumed making consumer products. There was plenty of pent-up demand for labor-saving appliances like the Hoover Model 28 vacuum cleaner, introduced in 1946. Hoover marketed these vacuums as great gifts for brides -- and there were many, as returning soldiers married and couples equipped households of their own.

- Hoover Vacuum Cleaner, circa 1910 - The Hoover Model O, introduced in 1908, was the first commercially successful portable vacuum. At 40 pounds, it was less than half the weight of other "portable" cleaners. With its motor and fan, rotary brush, and bag that captured dust, the electrically-powered--and expensive--Hoover vacuum removed dirt and dust much better than the carpet beaters or mechanical carpet sweepers used by many people at the time.
