In 1894, Milton Hershey established his chocolate company. Among the first products he produced were chocolate caramels, baking chocolate, and breakfast cocoa. As additional chocolate products emerged, the company produced recipe booklets, like this one, which features recipes for Hershey's Breakfast Cocoa in a variety of confections.

The cookies were so popular that Nestle developed individual semisweet morsels that didn't need to be cut up. Other companies soon developed their own morsels, including Hershey, who called its product "dainties."
