In line with the theme "Preserve the Environment," host city Spokane, Washington, reclaimed 100 acres of commercial and industrial land along its riverfront to house the fairgrounds. The fair attracted more than five million visitors from May to November 1974.

- Monorail and Space Needle in Downtown Seattle, Washington, circa 1962 - For the 1962 Seattle World's Fair, planners wanted a futuristic icon that fit the forward-looking theme of "Century 21." They ended up with two icons: the Space Needle, with its panoramic view from a revolving restaurant, and a monorail, which brought people to the fair from downtown. This monorail continues to serve the city as a public transit system.

- "San Francisco's Cable Cars," circa 1950 - San Francisco installed its first cable railway in 1873. Cars were pulled by an underground cable powered from a central station. Other cities built similar railways, but most removed their complex cable-based systems once electric streetcars became practical. San Francisco kept three cable car lines, which worked well on the city's hilly streets. They remain a beloved community symbol.
