- Boy's Bathing Suit, circa 1885 - Boys going swimming in the late 19th century often wore nothing at all -- unless in the presence of girls. When clothing was required, a one-piece cotton swimsuit like this was typical. This suit is a rare survival. Such ordinary clothing was not considered important enough to keep and often did not last.

- Tourists at Daytona Beach, Florida, circa 1960 - Daytona Beach, Florida, is celebrated for two things: its beautiful beach and auto racing. In fact, the beach attracted racers -- they used it first for land speed runs and then for stock car events. These tourists are using the beach for more leisurely pursuits. Note the 10-mph speed limit -- racing moved to nearby Daytona International Speedway in 1959.
