- Eleanor Clay Vacationing in Maine with Her Family, circa 1905 - Mount Desert Island, Maine, was the scenic playground for some of America's wealthiest families at the turn of the 20th century. Detroit department store magnate J.L. Hudson took his extended family there, including his niece Eleanor Lowithian Clay, on several summer vacations. Later, Eleanor married Edsel Ford and the couple built a summer home on the island.
