Knipper's Chalmers-Detroit vehicle started 20 seconds ahead of a Peerless Bug (which gained 11 seconds over the course of the race). The handicap win was not Knipper's only victory that day; he also won another Three-mile and a Fifty-mile race.

On July 31, 1909, Bill Knipper won the Three-mile Handicap race at the Grosse Pointe (Michigan) track. Knipper's Chalmers-Detroit vehicle started 20 seconds ahead of a Peerless Bug (which gained 11 seconds over the course of the race).
