- Reproduction of the 1856 Essay by John Burroughs, "Work and Wait" - Naturalist John Burroughs penned this composition during his college preparatory studies at Cooperstown Seminary. This was an early foray into essay writing in which Burroughs would excel. The photostatic reproduction of this essay, pictured above, was used by Clara Barrus, Burroughs' literary executor and official biographer, for her book <em>The Life and Letters of John Burroughs</em>, published in 1925.

- Henry Ford and Frank Campsall with Students and Faculty at George Washington Carver School, Richmond Hill, Georgia, circa 1940 - Henry Ford purchased vast amounts of land around present-day Richmond Hill, Georgia, beginning in the 1920s. After acquiring the property, Ford became interested in the civic improvement of the area. He built schools, churches and community centers. In 1939, Ford founded the George Washington Carver School, named in honor of his friend. In this image, Ford poses with the faculty and local schoolchildren.

- School Reward of Merit, 1820-1835 - During the nineteenth-century, teachers recognized students with paper "rewards of merit." These small tokens commended a student's excellent work, perfect attendance, good behavior or other noteworthy accomplishment. Some contained simple handwritten sentiments from the teacher to the pupil. Many were printed and colorful, with space available to write in the student's name as well as their own.

- Anthology of Writings by John Burroughs Students in Buffalo Grove, Illinois, 1857, "The Snowdrops" - Before John Burroughs (1837-1921) became an internationally known naturalist and writer he earned a living as a teacher. Burroughs began teaching in 1854 at a small district school in New York not far from where he grew up. In late 1856 Burroughs moved to Buffalo Grove, Illinois. He stayed until the spring of 1857. This book of essays and poetry was prepared for him by his students.

- Children and Teacher outside Public School 65, Brooklyn, New York, 1890-1915 - In 1890, Jenny Young Chandler, 25 years old and recently widowed, began working for the <em>New York Herald</em>. As a photojournalist and feature writer, Chandler captured life in Brooklyn, New York, and vicinity. By 1922, the time of her death, she had produced over 800 glass plate negatives. Her sensitive, insightful photographs depict people from all walks of life and the world in which they lived.
