Bandboxes were handy containers in the home or when traveling by stage, boat, or rail. Manufacturers covered these inexpensive pasteboard or wooden boxes with colorful papers. Some bandboxes were covered with papers depicting animals, places or specific scenes. Others, such as this hat-shaped one, were covered with decorative wallpaper of the day.

- Child's "Colonial" Bicentennial Costume, 1976 - Across the nation in 1976, innumerable events -- from parades and fireworks displays to television programs and sporting events -- marked the 200th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. A young Detroit, Michigan, boy commemorated the bicentennial in costume. His "revolutionary" ensemble included a shirt, waistcoat, and breeches, as well as a tricorne hat and ammunition bag.
