Melvin Parson earned his position as the Spring 2019 Entrepreneur-In-Residence at The Henry Ford because of his belief that market gardening plays a critical role in attaining full citizenship for the formerly incarcerated. Funding from the William Davidson Foundation's Initiative for Entrepreneurship supported documentation of Parson's gardening, work central to the mission of We The People Growers Association, which he founded in 2015.

Built in 1939, the Willow Run plant differed from other "Village Industries." Instead of local residents, boys from Ford's nearby Camp Willow Run -- which provided income and life-skills training for underprivileged teenagers -- worked here, supplying door and ignition locks and keys for Ford's passenger cars.

Instead of local residents, boys from Ford's nearby Camp Willow Run -- which provided income and life-skills training for underprivileged teenagers -- worked here, supplying door and ignition locks and keys for Ford's passenger cars.

- Worker inside the Sawmill at the Willow Run Bomber Plant, March 5, 1942 - During World War II, Ford Motor Company built B-24 bomber airplanes at its Willow Run plant, located 35 miles west of Detroit. Work on the factory's buildings started in March 1941. As trees were cleared, Ford erected an on-site sawmill that processed them into lumber. Much of that lumber went into temporary structures and housing at the rising factory.
