- Letter from John Trumbull to Sarah Hope Harvey Trumbull, December 9, 1818 - In 1817, the U.S. Congress commissioned John Trumbull to paint four Revolutionary-era scenes for the Capitol. The first, <em>Declaration of Independence</em>, was completed in 1818. Trumbull took the painting on a multi-city tour to give the public a chance to view the work before it returned to the Capitol. Trumbull mentioned the tour's success in this letter to his wife.

Coney Island had been a popular seaside getaway for New Yorkers since the 1850s. About 1900, it became home to three of America's first true amusement parks: Steeplechase Park, Luna Park, and Dreamland.

During the 1939-40 New York World's Fair, he highlighted the work of students attending his experimental schools. In the Ford building, boys from Ford's Edison Institute Schools operated quarter-size replicas based on machines from Thomas Edison's Menlo Park. Miniature equipment and displays completed the scene.
