- Program, "Memorial Day Exercises by the Alpheus Clark Post 118 of the Grand Army of the Republic," May 29, 1897 - This 1897 pamphlet details the schedule for a Memorial Day service organized by an Illinois post of the G.A.R. (an organization for Union Civil War veterans). Veterans traveled from the Grand Army Hall to the cemetery, where they decorated the graves of fallen Civil War soldiers. Prayers, speeches, music, and a formal reading of names ended the solemn graveside services.

From illustrations of naval battles to information on Indigenous nations, the map is chock full of description. It also informs us about what Americans didn't know about the continent in areas that are simply blank.

- Elegy: On the Death of James Lawrence, Esq. late Commander of the U.S. Frigate Chesapeake, 1813 - Captain James Lawrence took command of the USS <em>Chesapeake</em> in May 1813 during the War of 1812. On June 1, the seasoned crew of the British frigate HMS <em>Shannon</em> disabled and captured the <em>Chesapeake</em> after a short but intense battle--during which the mortally wounded Captain Lawrence issued a last command: "Don't give up the ship!" This elegy honors the fallen captain.

- Canteen, Made for a Massachusetts Militia, circa 1810 - This canteen, called a "cheesebox" for its similarity to boxes made to hold wheels of cheese, identifies the Massachusetts Militia (M.S.). A number of similarly decorated canteens survive. The reverse is labeled N.R., possibly a maker's mark. The O B scratched into the surface may be the militia member's initials or those of a later owner.
