The Dr. Sullivan and Richie Jean Sherrod Jackson Home from Selma, Alabama, opens in Greenfield Village this June, becoming the first home to be added to the collection of historic structures in more than 40 years. The home holds powerful stories of an ordinary family doing extraordinary things in the midst of the Voting Rights Movement.

By opening their home to their close friend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his allies as a place to rest and strategize, the Jackson family helped shape the Selma Voting Rights Movement and advance the passage of the landmark 1965 Voting Rights Act.

After the momentous events that took place in their home in 1965, the Jacksons' lives returned to normal ─ yet they knew that they and the world would never be the same. To preserve her family's story, Richie Jean Sherrod Jackson spent the last decades of her life writing a narrative, ensuring their story could be shared with generations to come.

In this temporary collections spotlight, Mrs. Jackson’s memoir, The House by the Side of the Road: The Selma Civil Rights Movement, takes center stage, highlighting how everyday people can preserve and share their own family stories.

Learn more about the Jackson family and the important stories that unfolded in their home, which opens the week of June 9 in Greenfield Village.
