The new design answered calls for better fuel economy with smaller engines, lighter weight, and improved aerodynamics. Performance was available in the form of an optional 5.0-liter engine added in 1982, and improved turbocharging in 1983. The long-running design remained in production through 1993, with a major update in 1987.

Former California Governor Ronald Reagan, a conservative, had locked up the nomination in May, and the only question remaining was who he would choose for his running mate. Reagan selected George W. Bush, his Republican primary opponent and a moderate, to balance the ticket. They won.
- Sign, "S-S-S-SH! Do Not Disturb," 1930-1945 - Like today, proprietors of mid-20th century hotels, motels and inns provided "Do Not Disturb" signs for weary travelers who wanted a restful stay. Guests placed the sign outside on their door to alert staff to please be quiet and not enter the room. This sign even included instructions that guests could use to stop unwanted telegrams or telephone calls.
