- Top Twenty: IMLS Communications Grant - Airport radio navigation beacons required pilots to listen for Morse code patterns to hold the correct course--notoriously difficult during storms. In 1936, Transcontinental & Western Air introduced an anti-snow directional antenna which could be used, in high-static situations, to "home in" on airport radio signals. This loop was housed in a sleek metal enclosure, protecting it from the elements.

Top Twenty: IMLS Communications Grant

In 1936, Transcontinental & Western Air introduced an anti-snow directional antenna which could be used, in high-static situations, to "home in" on airport radio signals. This loop was housed in a sleek metal enclosure, protecting it from the elements.

- Exposed Collections—2017-2020 IMLS Grant Project - Drivers in the early 1900s attached headlights to their automobiles to help light their way at night. To use this "King of the Road" model, automobilists filled the chambers with calcium carbide and then added water creating acetylene gas. Igniting the gas burner produced a strong white light. The lamp's lens and parabolic reflector cast a broad beam lighting the road ahead.
