- Apron, 1973-1982 - Carrie Dickerson -- a community activist who led an effort to prevent the construction of a nuclear power plant near Claremore, Oklahoma -- created this apron depicting alternative energy sources. Dickerson and her husband spent their retirement savings and mortgaged their farm to pay for legal proceedings and fees. Dickerson also raffled off quilts and aprons to fund the effort -- a cause she ultimately won.

- Sawmill and Power House at Fordlandia, Brazil, 1931 - Henry Ford established Fordlandia and Belterra in the Brazilian rainforest to supply rubber for automobile production. He began shipping machinery and supplies to the Amazon in 1928. Ford paid the indigenous workers good wages and supplied various amenities -- he also imposed foreign work traditions and behavioral restrictions which the workers resented. The plantations failed and Ford Motor Company disposed of the project in 1945.
