Cone wrote his "Dear Comrade" that he would not be able to attend the 1887 Grand Army of the Republic, Michigan Department, Encampment in Grand Rapids. He did, however, update his friend about other members in his local Post. Cone signed off, "F. C. & L." an acronym for "Fraternity, Charity and Loyalty" -- the guiding principles of the Grand Army of the Republic.
