Litogot's regiment, the 24th Michigan Volunteer Infantry, was there to serve as honor guard for Abraham Lincoln's funeral. When his regiment mustered out in June, Litogot returned home to the young wife he had left behind nearly three years before. His infant son had died while Litogot was away.
