The toy's popularity in America began in the 1920s when Pedro Flores, a Filipino immigrant, entertained tourists with yo-yo tricks at the California hotel where he worked. Flores began to manufacture yo-yos but soon sold his company to Donald Duncan. Duncan sponsored demonstration tours and contests and created fun-to-play-with yo-yos like this one.
