- Frisbie's Pies Plate, circa 1935 - The Frisbie Pie Company was founded in Bridgeport, Connecticut, in 1871. The company served its pies in tin plates. These "Frisbie"-embossed plates became legendary when reports claimed that local students entertained themselves by flinging the plates through the air and yelling "Frisbie." Toymakers in California produced a plastic variation in the 1950s, called it a frisbee, and created an American toy icon.
