- Leonard "Cleanable" Refrigerator, 1882 - Iceboxes provided a convenient way for Americans in the late 19th century to keep perishable foods fresh longer. But it did take some effort. Blocks of ice had to be delivered regularly, pans of melted ice water needed to be emptied and the icebox's interior had to be scrubbed to keep it sanitary. This Leonard "Cleanable" refrigerator offered removable linings for easy cleaning and hopefully less work.
