Self-serve freezer cabinets in grocery stores allowed shoppers to purchase different ice cream flavors and novelties. This ice cream cake roll took advantage of the highly popular Howdy Doody children's TV show (1947-1960). Howdy Doody, a freckle-faced marionette, was created by radio announcer Bob Smith.
