- Burr's Patent Nursing Bottle Advertisement, circa 1868 - Into the 19th century, inventors tried many different devices for feeding animal's milk to infants--of wood, ceramic, glass, pewter, and silver. All of them were difficult to clean. The build-up of bacteria made these feeding devices detrimental to infants' health. By the time of this advertisement, strides were being made in more hygienic glass bottles and India rubber nipples.
