The film, starring an all-Black cast, told the story of fictional World War I combat pilot Billy Stokes. The character of Stokes's pilot girlfriend, Ruth Sawtelle, was inspired by pioneering Black aviator Bessie Coleman. Coleman died in an airplane accident in Jacksonville prior to the movie's release.
