- "Bank-O-Mat," Bank and Gumball Machine, circa 1960 - This toy Bank-O-Mat gumball machine gave kids a treat and, at the same time, helped them save money. Children deposited a coin in the slot and then pushed the lever to drop the money into the till. Another mechanism turned and dropped a gumball -- a treat for the thrifty child.

Advertisers, armed with new methods of color printing, bombarded potential customers with trade cards. Americans enjoyed and often saved the vibrant little advertisements found in product packages or distributed by local merchants. Many survive as historical records of commercialism in the United States.
