- Vertical Lift Railroad Bridge, Morris and Essex Canal near Mountain View, New Jersey, 1890-1901 - For nearly thirty years, 1895 to 1924, the Detroit Publishing Company was one of the major image publishers in the world. The company had a wide-ranging stock of original photographs, including this image of a section of the Morris Canal. The canal used a series of water-driven inclined planes to move anthracite, a type of coal, across northern New Jersey.

Diesel-electric locomotives, introduced on American railroads in the 1920s, offered several advantages over their steam-powered counterparts. They used less fuel, required less maintenance, and could be operated by smaller crews. Many early diesel-electrics proved themselves in yard service, like this unit switching cars at a marine terminal on the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad.
- "Lackawanna Railway Station, Mt. Pocono, Pennsylvania," circa 1905 - The arrival of the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad transformed the Pocono Mountains from a secluded wilderness into a scenic vacation destination. Once New Yorkers and Philadelphians found they could easily make the trip there in about two hours, Mount Pocono became the site of numerous boarding houses, hotels, and resorts. This train station was constructed in 1886.

The arrival of the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad transformed the Pocono Mountains from a secluded wilderness into a scenic vacation destination. Once New Yorkers and Philadelphians found they could easily make the trip there in about two hours, Mount Pocono became the site of numerous boarding houses, hotels, and resorts. This train station was constructed in 1886.
- Loading Coal onto Steamship, Lackawanna Railroad Ore Docks, Buffalo, New York, circa 1900 - The Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad connected New York City with Buffalo, passing through northeastern Pennsylvania's anthracite coal region on the way. Clean-burning anthracite, which produced little smoke or soot, was particularly well suited to home heating. When oil and natural gas gained favor, DL&W's fortunes declined. Hoping to avoid bankruptcy, it merged with the Erie Railroad in 1960.
