- Wurlitzer Sideman Model 5000 Electronic Rhythm Box, 1959-1965 - Created in 1959, the Wurlitzer Sideman Rhythm Box was the first commercially available drum machine. The Sideman's mechanical rotating disk emulated ten percussion instruments and ten preset rhythms based on popular genres such as waltzes or rhumba. Although Wurlitzer stopped producing the Sideman in 1969, it was influential on the development of future rhythm machines.
