Firefighters were celebrated in books, on stage, and in song. The "New York Fireman's March" was written by Mark M. Doob in 1894. Hugh Bonner, the sixth New York City Fire Commissioner, is pictured on the cover of the sheet music.

They saw lucrative potential in motorizing police departments, fire departments, and other municipal agencies. This 1906 advertisement from Oldsmobile promotes the car's use by the Boston Fire Department. There is an implied message too: If the Oldsmobile can handle rugged fire service, think how well it can serve your everyday needs.

The city council appointed him to this post in 1878 and he served as the city's first professional fire chief. Hill posed for this photograph with an inscribed presentation fire trumpet -- perhaps a gift for his service. Fire chiefs used less ornate trumpets to call out directions during fire emergencies.
