- Sunbeam Mixmaster Electric Hand Mixer, circa 1965 - The Sunbeam Corporation received the first handheld electric mixer patent in 1961. Handheld electric mixers were lightweight and more portable than larger, stationary countertop models. The Sunbeam Corporation, a leading home appliances manufacturer in post-World War II America, produced this mixer in an avocado green color, which was fashionable for modern kitchens in the mid-1960s.
