Her interest in and collections of American folk art influenced her work. During the 1940s and 1950s, <em>Life</em> magazine sent Lee on several assignments and commissioned her to illustrate her travels. In 1945, she went to Hollywood. While there, MGM, too, hired Lee to create works around its film, <em>The Harvey Girls</em>.
