Henry Ford with Group at Ford Homestead on His 60th Birthday, July 30, 1923
- Ford Workers and Administrators Viewing a Sea Cow, or Manatee, at Fordlandia, circa 1931 - Henry Ford established Fordlandia and Belterra in the Brazilian rainforest to supply rubber for automobile production. He began shipping machinery and supplies to the Amazon in 1928. Ford paid the indigenous workers good wages and supplied various amenities -- he also imposed foreign work traditions and behavioral restrictions which the workers resented. The plantations failed and Ford Motor Company disposed of the project in 1945.

- Ford Employees Claude Smith, John Rogge, Curtis Pringle and James Kennedy with Children at Fordlandia, Boa Vista, Brazil, 1928-1931 - In 1928, Ford Motor Company established a 2.5 million-acre rubber plantation and industrial town - called Fordlandia - at Boa Vista in the Amazon Rainforest. The men pictured here helped select and acquire land along the Tapajos River for Fordlandia, which ultimately failed. Ford disposed of its Brazilian rubber operations in 1945.

- James Gleason, Henry Ford and Others with Westinghouse Portable Steam Engine No. 345 at Ford Homestead, circa 1920 - Portable steam engines could be hauled from farm to farm to power grain threshers, sawmills, or corn shellers. While working on a farm in 1882, nineteen-year-old Henry Ford powered a portable Westinghouse engine - similar to the one seen here - more effectively than his boss. The accomplishment had a lasting effect--Ford continued to restore and operate portable steam engines well into the 20th century.
