- Portrait of Caroline Amelia Taylor Litogot and Sons Edward and Arthur, 1882 - When Caroline Taylor Litogot's husband Barney died in 1873, the young widow -- left with a seven-year-old and an infant son to support -- succeeded her husband as lighthouse keeper on Mamajuda Island in the Detroit River near Wyandotte, Michigan. She posed for this photograph in 1882 with her sons Edward and Artemus. Caroline remarried that year, but this skilled keeper tended her lighthouse until 1885.
