- Clara Ford and Henry Ford at Fair Lane, Dearborn, Michigan, 1932 - In the 1910s, many of Detroit's wealthy citizens abandoned the city for eastern suburbs. Henry and Clara Ford sought a different path. They selected 1300 acres of farmland in Dearborn (west of Detroit) as the site for their new estate, called Fair Lane. The couple posed for this photograph, taken in their living room in 1932.

- Man and Woman Playing Violin and Piano, circa 1905 - Postcards allowed people to share snapshots of their lives--for less than it cost to mail a letter. When the United States Postal Service approved postcards with divided backs in 1907, senders could include a written message beside the recipient's address. Americans were hooked. They mailed hundreds of millions of postcards every year before the start of World War I.
