Survivors of the 24th Michigan Regiment, Civil War Monument Dedication at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, 1889 - The 24th Michigan Volunteer Infantry was part of the famed "Iron Brigade," one of the most celebrated northern units during the Civil War. At Gettysburg in July 1863, this regiment was engaged in fierce fighting--and they suffered the most casualties of any Union regiment there. In June 1889, the 24th Michigan's aging veterans gathered on the Gettysburg battlefield to dedicate their unit's monument. Then they posed for this photograph.
