Kirby spent much of his career on the Great Lakes, where his Detroit Dry Dock Company built everything from opulent passenger steamers to powerful ice-breaking railroad car ferries. Kirby influenced Henry Ford, who apprenticed at Detroit Dry Dock as a teenager.
