- Brooklyn, Flatbush & Coney Island Railway Schedule for Visiting Brighton Beach, Summer 1879 - Since the 1850s, Coney Island had been a popular summer haven for New Yorkers. Brighton Beach, named after the fashionable English seaside resort, was located at the eastern end of Coney Island. By the 1870s, middle-class Brooklynites could hop on the Brooklyn, Flatbush, and Coney Island Railway and take advantage of this beach's saltwater bathing and gracious accommodations.

Fredrick Law Olmsted, the father of landscape architecture, designed portions of the park. The City of Detroit opened Belle Isle to the public in 1880; over 260,000 people visited the park in the summer of 1882, proving its immediate popularity. It has remained among Michigan's most visited parks.
