- Pennant, "Telstar U.S.A., Andover, Me.," 1962-1965 - Telstar, the first commercial communication satellite, was launched in July 1962. The low-Earth-orbit satellite transmitted messages to tracking stations in the U.S. and Europe. The Andover, Maine, station consisted of a giant antenna covered with a fabric dome. In the 1960s, thousands of visitors flocked to see this space-age "bubble" -- and perhaps buy a souvenir to remember their experience.
