It was her first run for public office. The ticket, headed by 30-year party veteran Jules Levin, received less than 10,000 votes. Blomen returned to her home state of Massachusetts after the campaign and continued to speak on behalf of the party.

Professionals used open-reel magnetic tape recorders to pre-record radio shows; consumer models were used for home recording and music playback. The format was sonically superior to compact cassettes introduced in 1963, but shifted to niche use by the 1980s.

Seeing Ford specifically target female car buyers in its advertisements, St. James wrote a letter to the company that pointed out the marketing opportunity in sponsoring her racing efforts. The gambit worked and Ford signed on as a sponsor in 1981.
