Bissell Cyco Ball Bearing Carpet Sweeper "Grand Rapids," 1897-1922
- Woman Sweeping Stone-Paved Street, 1934 - "Roads of the World" was part of the Ford Rotunda in Dearborn, Michigan. Visitors rode new Ford vehicles through reproductions of famous roadways from around the world. Ford spent $176,000 landscaping the attraction into historic and modern sections. To ensure a realistic, immersive experience, crews used reference photographs--like this one--to recreate the 19 "Roads of the World."

- Feather Duster, 2000 - Starting in the early 1980s--and already established as an internationally recognized architect--Michael Graves began to pursue a parallel career as a product designer. Over the following three and a half decades he and his collaborators designed everything from humble household goods to limited edition luxury items for clients as diverse as Steuben, Alessi, Target, J. C. Penney, and Disney.

Starting in the early 1980s--and already established as an internationally recognized architect--Michael Graves began to pursue a parallel career as a product designer. Over the following three and a half decades he and his collaborators designed everything from humble household goods to limited edition luxury items for clients as diverse as Steuben, Alessi, Target, J. C. Penney, and Disney.
- Industrial School, Girls Sweeping and Reading a Lesson, 1890-1915 - In 1890, Jenny Young Chandler, 25 years old and recently widowed, began working for the <em>New York Herald</em>. As a photojournalist and feature writer, Chandler captured life in Brooklyn, New York, and vicinity. By 1922, the time of her death, she had produced over 800 glass plate negatives. Her sensitive, insightful photographs depict people from all walks of life and the world in which they lived.

Industrial School, Girls Sweeping and Reading a Lesson, 1890-1915
In 1890, Jenny Young Chandler, 25 years old and recently widowed, began working for the New York Herald. As a photojournalist and feature writer, Chandler captured life in Brooklyn, New York, and vicinity. By 1922, the time of her death, she had produced over 800 glass plate negatives. Her sensitive, insightful photographs depict people from all walks of life and the world in which they lived.
- Aunt Phoebe, Magnolia-On-The-Ashley, Charleston, S.C., 1901 - Aunt Phoebe used a twig broom to clear footpaths among azalea groves at Magnolia-on-the-Ashley. John Grimke Drayton, minister, plantation owner, and nephew of abolitionists Sarah and Angelina Grimke, opened the garden to the public in 1870 to save it from financial ruin. Sweeping paths and yards was a southern tradition, a routine that removed obstacles (brush and snakes) and ensured safe passage.
