- Thomas Edison, John Burroughs and Henry Ford in Fort Myers, Florida, 1914 - John Burroughs (1837-1921) was an internationally known naturalist and writer. His writings appealed to Henry Ford, who invited Burroughs in 1914 to join him and Thomas Edison to explore the Florida Everglades together. This led to the more famous Vagabond camping trips of a few years later, which also involved Harvey Firestone.

Ford purchased the property, which neighbored his friend Thomas Edison's winter retreat, in 1916. The Fords named the estate "The Mangoes" and surrounded their newly built bungalow with tropical landscaping, including citrus trees and the palms and pond seen here.

- Thomas Edison's 81st Birthday at Fort Myers, Florida, Site of Rubber Plant Experimentation, 1928 - In the 1920s, Thomas Edison began his search for a home-grown source of rubber. The U.S. imported rubber from Southeast Asia and the East Indies and Edison wanted a ready source in case America's supply was cut off. Edison experimented with a variety of plants at his Fort Myers, Florida, and West Orange, New Jersey, laboratories. Goldenrod proved most promising.

In the 1920s, Thomas Edison began his search for a home-grown source of rubber. The U.S. imported rubber from Southeast Asia and the East Indies and Edison wanted a ready source in case America's supply was cut off. Edison experimented with a variety of plants at his Fort Myers, Florida, and West Orange, New Jersey, laboratories. Goldenrod proved most promising.

This image shows the caretaker's house on the grounds. The Fords rarely visited "The Mangoes" after Mr. Edison's death in 1931, and they sold the estate in 1945.
