Early cycling enthusiasts organized bicycle clubs to promote their sport. This photograph shows the Boston Bicycle Club members on an 1884 "run" to Wellesley, Massachusetts. Organized runs or touring events put cyclists on the road and exposed the general public to the bicycle. These events also provided exercise and encouraged camaraderie among the members.
