Compound Vertical Marine Steam Engine, circa 1893

01

Artifact Overview

This steam engine was built to power a small boat. Its compound design meant that steam was used twice -- in both a high- and a low-pressure cylinder. The engine features an unusual spiral-cut collar on its crankshaft that changes the valve timing, allowing the engine -- and the boat -- to operate in the reverse direction.
